01 / THE BET
Carbon fibre. Hybrid power. A new direction.
In 2009, BMW imagined a sports car shaped around lighter materials and electric power. In 2014, that vision reached the road as the i8: BMW’s first plug-in hybrid.
02 / THE CARBON CORE
The carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic passenger cell forms the rigid upper structure around the occupants.
The aluminium lower structure carries the battery, suspension and drivetrain.
The high-voltage battery runs through the centre of the car, mounted low to help keep the centre of gravity down.
A 96 kW (131 hp) electric motor powers the front wheels, with torque available from a standstill.
Behind the cabin, a turbocharged 1.5-litre three-cylinder sends 170 kW (231 hp) to the rear wheels.
LIFE + DRIVE
A light, rigid cell around the people inside.
The passenger cell is made from carbon fibre reinforced plastic. Beneath it, an aluminium structure carries the battery, suspension and drivetrain, with the weight kept low in the car.
03 / THE LITTLE ENGINE
A 1.5-litre turbo drives the rear wheels. An electric motor drives the front. Together, they deliver 266 kW (362 hp) through all four wheels. A bold formula, even today.

04 / INTO THE COCKPIT
